Ecosystem readiness for the SECP upgrade
The Vasil upgrade brought a host of significant improvements to the Cardano network, including enhanced performance by increasing throughput, script efficiency, and reducing latency in block transmission.
Cardano’s next protocol upgrade, will bring new built-in functions to Plutus to support ECDSA and Schnorr cryptographic signatures. This will allow developers to use a wider range of multi-signature or threshold signature designs and will be native to Cardano and provide the highest level of security. As with previous upgrades, we’ll use the same Cardano’s hard fork combinator (HFC) approach to bring this new cross-chain functionality to the Cardano network.
While this upgrade is not as complex, nor does it have such an impact across existing DApps, IOG, the Cardano Foundation, and EMURGO are still ensuring readiness by working closely with key Cardano stakeholders (notably SPOs, DApps, exchanges) who may need to prepare for the new capability.
Based on current stakeholder readiness and community input, and with the preview environment running successfully with this new capability since November 2022, we are targeting the following dates:
- Pre-production upgrade - February 11th, 2023 at 00:00 UTC
- Mainnet upgrade - February 14th, 2023 at 21:44:51 UTC
Over 77% of SPOs are currently running the required new node, with 86% of blocks produced, surpassing the goal of 75% of produced blocks by the time of the upgrade. Exchanges have been notified of the upgrade, so they have the time they need to upgrade their systems. IOG has also polled the DApp development community, and while only a few have indicated their intent to use the new functionality, all DApps are required to update to ensure compatibility with the new protocol version.

EXCHANGE READINESS
As always, the Cardano Foundation exchange integration team will be supporting exchanges throughout this upgrade. Users will be able to track the status of their preferred exchange, using the curated list of links below. While the list will be updated weekly based on info from exchanges, it should not be considered ‘live’ information, but rather a snapshot of progress.
Any ada holders using exchanges or wallets will not be adversely affected by the Valentine upgrade, and should not have any concerns about their holdings. However, certain delays or service disruptions (e.g. withdrawing funds) are still possible while exchanges are undergoing integration work.
