Daedalus Wallet Testnet Environments
Byron Testnet is the test environment for the current version of Cardano that Daedalus wallet uses. Shelley Testnet has been created for the next development phase of Cardano that will have staking and other features. Note that Shelley testnet does not have a Daedalus wallet at this time and is mentioned here for clarification purposes only. Read more about Byron Testnet and Shelley Testnet. Information about Cardano development phases can be found in this blog.
Cardano Byron Testnet Refresh
From time to time the Testnets are refreshed. Refresh means that the testnet blockchain is deleted and started again from the genesis block. There are many technical reasons for doing this but the main benefit is that the blockchain size is reduced. Using the testnet with a small blockchain allows for fast syncing, which in turn speeds up the testing process.
- The Testnet Daedalus wallet application from the previous testnet will not work after the testnet refresh. Please delete old Daedalus wallet testnet version(s) and all data associated with them, then download and install the latest version of testnet Daedalus wallet.
- After the refresh, it's a brand new testnet blockchain so you cannot restore a wallet from the previous testnet on it. Paper wallets from previous testnets are similarly no longer valid.
