Announcement - 28th May 2020 - Decommission Byron legacy nodes - cardano-sl EOL
Attention: This affects all exchanges still running cardano-sl, please read the following notice carefully.
On the 8th of June 2020, as part of the journey to launching Shelley era functionality on the Cardano mainnet, IOHK will decommission all legacy Byron nodes and relays.
Why are we doing this?
This is an important step towards the beginning of the Shelley era on mainnet and in preparation for Cardano’s hard fork, currently planned for early August.
What do you need to do?
To avoid any outage or downtime adversely affecting your customers, all exchanges still using cardano-sl must migrate to a supported version of the wallet before the 8th of June 2020. For a full list of Shelley supported components please see the Adrestia website here.
Unable to migrate before the 8th of June?
If you are unable to migrate before the 8th of June 2020 then you need to deploy a custom exchange-topology file to cardano-sl.
What is a custom-topology file?
A custom-topology file is a list of private Byron legacy nodes that connect directly to the mainnet. After deploying the custom-topology file cardano-sl will connect to mainnet using this private network of legacy nodes.
How to request the exchange-topology file?
For security reasons, each exchange wanting to use the custom-topology file must request this by opening a ticket via Zendesk. To request the network topology file please open a ticket via Zendesk by emailing exchange.support@iohk.io
How to deploy the exchange-topology file in cardano-sl?
After opening a ticket via Zendesk you should receive an email containing the new exchange topology file.
Instructions on how to deploy exchange-topology file in cardano-sl:
- How to update the exchange-topology file in cardano-sl using nix
- How to update the exchange-topology file in cardano-sl using docker
Maintenance window wallet downtime
Deploying a new topology file will require a wallet restart. Therefore, exchanges doing so will need to schedule a maintenance window or include this within their planned maintenance schedule.
What happens next?
Please note deploying the exchange-topology file should only be used as a temporary measure to gain access to Cardano mainnet.
On 1st July 2020 IOHK will decommission all Byron legacy nodes. This means the exchange-topology file will no longer work and only Shelley supported components will have connectivity to mainnet.
We strongly urge all exchanges to migrate to a supported version of the wallet prior to this date.
